Location #2

Naples Access Rd. A short loop of the old highway just west of Location #1 on the south side of the freeway. The old cement has been pretty much covered here, but there is some interesting history to this area, and one fantastic old bridge.

You might ask yourself... if this is Naples Access Rd., where is Naples. Well, there was supposed to be a Naples here, "City of Naples by the Sea" was to be a planned community by real estate develepor John Williams in 1888, but it never panned out. Today it is a gated community of modest ranch style homes called Ranco Dos Pueblos.

There is actually a reference to the coastal side of this area from 1542. In a log entry dated
October 16, 1542 — some 50 years after Columbus “discovered” PuertoRico — legendary explorer Juan Cabrillo described native villages that sat opposite each other on the sandy shores of a canyon mouthin what is now Dos Pueblos Ranch along the Gaviota Coast.

The Board of Supervisors plaque. A little hard to read.
The classic iron support structure. Typical of bridges of this era.
Does this look 104 years old?
The crack reminds me of the Liberty Bell.
Rusty? Yes, but still standing after 104 years.
