Location #5

The famous Arroyo Hondo highway bridge, built in 1918, and photographed by just about everybody. It carried trafic in both directions of highway 101 until 1950 when it was replaced by 4 lanes over a landfill with a culvert. The railroad trestle just to the south of it was built in 1896, and is very impressive also. There was also another bridge built just to the east of this over the Arroyo Quemada canyon in 1917. The Quemada bridge is still carrying southbound traffic on the current 101. Arroyo Hondo means "deep creek" in spanish, and Arroyo Quemada means "burnt creek".
