Shell Beach Section
The Shell Beach section consists entirely of commercial locations in the town of Shell Beach, California. There are no places where the original cement highway can be seen. The section begins at the south end of the Avila cut, and the original 101 route is pretty much buried under the current freeway up until the town of Shell Beach. From there it follows the current route of Shell Beach Rd. south to where it changes to Price St. as it enters downtown Pismo Beach.
Originally, the site of a Chumash village, Shell Beach is considered the northern portion of Pismo Beach, which was not incorporated until 1939. Worries over higher taxes caused the city to be disincorporated in 1940. The current government of Pismo Beach/Shell Beach began in 1946.
