Location #A

Most of the California Missions are not directly on the 101 highway, but it was because of these missions that highway 101 exists. So I took a few shots of the mission in 2007, and have included them here. The Soledad mission is unusual, because unlike almost all of the existing missions in California, parts of the Soledad mission have been left original, and not re-constructed. In a way, it shows the value of reconstructing the missions as without that, they would all decay into what is left in Soledad. That said, I love seeing the actual original structures, even if they have been reduced to crumbling piles of mud.

The reconstructed chapel and annex. Note the old ECR bell in front.

This is what is left of the original Chapel.
A tribute to father Ibanez

I believe this area has now been covered to avoid further decay.

Another look at the original ruins. This is what all the missions would look like today without preservation and reconstructions.

The old Indian Workshops with a nice section of the original adobe wall.
