Back in the fifties, this area was practically nothing but motels and gas stations. Here we find two pretty close together. The Sunbeam Motel at 1656 Monterey Rd. was has not changed names, and was built somewhere in the early 50's. The Villa Motel at 1670 Monterey Rd. was originally named the Villa San Luis, and dates to about the same time. Both are on the west side of the road.
