Soledad Section

The original route of Highway 101 follows the current 101 freeway for about 8 miles until you get to the town of Soledad, Ca.. Soledad is mostly known for it's original California  Mission Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, or " Our Lady of Solitude ", and for the State Prison located about 4 miles north.

The old route through Soledad crossed the Salinas River just south of town, then contuinued north on what is now Nestles Ave. It went over a railroad crossing, and continued up Front Street through the old downtown area. Between 1938 and the route bybassed Nestles Ave., and came up Front St. from the new bridge, and went under the railroad tracks.
